The Problem with Carfax for Theft Checks
Carfax is excellent for vehicle history - accidents, service records, and ownership. But it has a critical gap: Carfax does NOT have real-time access to law enforcement stolen vehicle databases.
This means a car could be reported stolen last week, and Carfax wouldn't show it. Their data comes from DMV records and insurance companies, which can lag weeks or months behind actual theft reports.
Critical Warning
In 2024, over 1 million vehicles were stolen in the US. Many appear on Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace within days - before Carfax data updates. Relying solely on Carfax for theft verification is a $15,000+ gamble.
